Sophisticated elegance in an old sponge-processing factory

Tucked away in a labyrinth of cobbled streets sits a tastefully renovated boutique hotel in an 18th-century sponge-processing factory. The residence builds on its existing patina and oozes old-world charm in a nod to its sponge-making roots — an exquisite space with warmth, character, and a strong sense of place.

Nautical-chic sets the tone for the hotel with colorful maps, black and white snapshots of sponge divers, and maritime accents lending authenticity and personality to the space. A harmonious fusion of impeccable aesthetics, comfort, and tradition on this Saronic island gem.

“As one’s destination is never a place, Bratsera is always a new way of seeing things.”

the look.

Stylish rooms tastefully blend nautical themes with a scattering of vintage and antique finds. Original features include ancient Hydriot gray stonework, white-washed walls, hand-painted friezes, exposed rough-hewn timber ceilings, warm terracotta-blocked flooring, and wide-planked floors. Tranquil interiors ooze character chock-full of antique nautical maps, black and white sponge-diving photos, and old-world memorabilia.

the experience.

swanky pool

Lounge poolside in the quiet courtyard oasis of the hotel and delight in romantic candlelit dinners by the pool.

savory local treats

Wake to a delicious spread of home-baked good, creamy yogurts, locally-sourced cheeses, thyme honey, and fresh juices, and savor delightful meals poolside or out on the veranda. For a night on the town, try dining at one of our favorites: Xeri Elia Douskos Taverna, Petkakis, and Kodylenia Taverna.

base to explore

Stroll through the town’s labyrinth of streets and discover the funky art galleries and bougie boutique stores. Meander along donkey paths to nearby Kamini and plunge from the rocky crops wherever you desire. Or traverse the entire island along goat paths winding through rocky outcrops, olive groves, and flowered fields (bring lots of water!). Of course, you can always hail a willing mule to take you part of the way. Enjoy easy access to all Hydra offers right from the door (and no cars!). Fritter the day away, sipping frappes (slowly, like the Greeks), celeb-spotting, and drooling over the glitzy yachts on full display. And be sure to enjoy the sundowners at Hydronetta bar on the nearby cliffs.

behind the scenes

Confab with staff and owners and learn about the hotel’s history and renovation (the original architect won the Europa Nostra award for the conversion).

the impact.

The hotel's architect was awarded a EUROPA NOSTRA diploma in 1996 for his work restoring the Bratsera. In addition, the hotel received HotelsCombined’s “Best Greek Historic Resort” in 2019 and “Recognition of Excellence” in 2020.

Eco-design

The hotel resides in a UNESCO-protected sponge factory dating back to the 1860s. Bratsera consciously renovated the sponge processing factory and was recognized for high standards of design and renovation, priding itself on preserving original details and using traditional materials only.
