Finca Esperanza Verde

Matagalpa Highlands, Nicaragua

Nicaragua / Central Highlands / Finca Esperanza Verde

A rustic-chic coffee-farm stay in the lush highlands of Nicaragua

Nicked straight from the pages of a Tolkien novel, Finca Esperanza Verde feels like the Nicaraguan version of the shire. So if you're looking for an authentic and immersive travel experience, these stilted tropical palapa-thatched casitas smack dab in the middle of the Nicaraguan Highlands may be your ticket.

Featured in Fathom Away’s Travel Anywhere (and Avoid Being a Tourist), this storied coffee farm is bang on target for those seeking experiential travel and full-on nature. The kind of place that lures you in with warm hospitality, rich impactful initiatives, and local stories. Tiny in size but big on experience and delightfully far from the fray. Please note as of August 2022, the finca was still temporarily closed.

“Come learn our traditions and experience the rhythm of life on a coffee farm — a chance to meet the farmers, their families, and the children at the school and leave here knowing that your visit made a difference in the lives of the people of the community of La Chispa.”

the look.

Stilted wood-framed cabins are thoughtfully designed using native materials and local touches. The charming, no-frills interiors are basic and intimate, furnished with warm wooden furniture and decorated in neutral earthy hues, natural woods, and hand-carved furnishings. Wooden balconies with comfy deck chairs frame the beautiful farmyard views and add to the indoor/outdoor vibe.

the impact.

It pushes its eco-credentials on all fronts: wildlife conservation, sustainable energy practices, community development, and cultural tourism. Nominated as World’s Leading Eco-lodge by World Travel Awards.

Community-focused

Committed to providing employment, income (paying higher than average wages), and training. Most of the farm's inputs are purchased from the local markets and vendors. In addition, donations are made to development initiatives (schools and water systems) in the municipality of San Ramon.

Culinary Sustainability

Sources food locally or from their own gardens.

Waste, water, and energy management

Electrical power comes from photovoltaic panels and a hydroelectric generator. Hydro energy is used to process the coffee, and waste treatment is entirely ecological.
