Camp Sossus

Namib Tsaris Conservancy, Namibia

A uniquely designed semi-permanent low-impact tented camp in the Neuhof Nature Reserve

Fling open your tent at Camp Sossus and feel like a 19th-century explorer. Nestled within the recesses of a natural granite amphitheater, the camp is nearly invisible from a distance; its eight large tents harmoniously blending into the wilderness that surrounds them. The tents are an oasis of rustic comfort, with stonewalls for wind protection and roofs built from recycled oil drums.

Each is stylishly furnished, with twin beds, a shaded day bed, and an open-air bathroom. Each tent also has access to its own star bed, the perfect venue for watching the magnificent night sky. A central lounge and dining area with a fireplace beckon guests to sit, sip, and share stories as the sun goes down.

“Our intention with Camp Sossus was to change perception, change values, and ultimately highlight what we as a company stand for.”

—Tristan Cowley, Managing Director of Ultimate Safaris

the look.

Surrounding a communal area constructed entirely from recycled oil drums, desert driftwood, and corrugated iron, the canvas Meru tents on wooden platforms exude a stylishly furnished rustic-chic charm. These tents offer simplicity and comfort, each equipped with twin beds, a shaded day bed, and an open-air bathroom that includes a flush toilet, washbasin, and a bucket shower with fitted solar lighting.

Each tent has access to its star bed, the perfect venue for watching the night sky. Stone walls keep the winds out, and the roofs made from 500 recycled oil drums keep the tents cool. The camp’s eclectic furniture is predominantly crafted from recycled metals and wood, and it operates entirely on solar power. The ambiance is characterized by its neutral and natural aesthetics.
