Metohi Kindelis
Crete, Greece
A fusion of farmhouse charm and sophisticated style in a late 16th-century Metohi-style farmhouse in the Cretan countryside
Set in a beautifully restored Venetian-era Metohi on the outskirts of Chania, this charming farmhouse transports guests back in time to a simpler, more traditional way of life. Enter through a graceful wisteria-strewn archway into the farm’s inner sanctum — a sun-drenched cobblestone courtyard — and one is instantly overcome with a sense of tranquility and warmth.
And Danai, the face behind the place, is a treasure trove of family stories and history, welcoming guests like long-lost friends into her lovely family home. A throwback to a simpler, more traditional way of life, Metohi Kindelis is a Cretan gem to be reckoned with.
“Our definition of luxury has to do with this subtle charm of older times, with nature’s smells, slow living, with the people, and the personal genuine contact. It has to do with detoxing from technology and digital images, with eating healthy, organic food and savoring the local flavors, with taking time for baths and naps, with reading books under the Mediterranean sunshine, with allowing yourself to suspend time.”

the look.
Terracotta walls draped in bougainvillea and flowering wisteria vines, cobblestone courtyards brimming with oversized terracotta pots, antique millstones, and sculpted cacti: the stone-built farmhouse exudes charm and tranquility. Self-contained guest houses are renovated with great style and authenticity. Spacious rooms are constructed with original wood-beamed ceilings, exposed rough-cut stone, and massive original arches, thoughtfully decorated with quirky antique finds and whimsy accents for flair. Dreamy rambling gardens perfumed with lemon, olive, and fig trees surround each villa, and sun-drenched terraces scattered with sun loungers and comfy hammocks frame delightfully private pools.

Delight in learning about the hotel’s history — Danai is the manager and a lovely hotelier passionate about conscious travel and sustainability, and if you are lucky, her charming uncle Manolis will show you around his well-tended organic fruit gardens. Follow Danai’s recommendations on what’s hip and authentically local in the area. We loved visiting the ceramicist Manoussos Chalkiadakis in the Apokoronas region and tasting wine at Manousakis Winery. Also, enjoy easy access to Chania (artsy boutiques, winding cobble-stoned streets, and market stalls).
