The Outpost

Makuleke National Park, South Africa

South Africa / Greater Kruger / The Outpost

Ultra-remote design-worthy safari lodge set in the northern part of the Kruger with views of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers

Perched on the sandstone hillsides overlooking a vast escarpment of scrub and baobab trees, Outpost Lodge lives up to its name: wild and remote. These uniquely designed, stilted units were built to inspire a sense of awe — a bold fusion of polished concrete, wood, steel, and soothing industrial-chic interiors. State-of-the-art retractable walls blur the distinction between inside and out, forging a genuine connection to nature.

Most travelers don’t venture up to Makuleke, known as the jewel of northern Kruger. But Outpost Lodge is unique, staffed by locals (who own the Makuleke concession), and boasts a high-touch safari experience not found in the larger lodges — a delicious retreat to chill and soak in the far-flung outpost vibe.

“The simplicity of nature inspires our approach to our products and services. Nature’s tendency is to achieve a state of harmony — a celebration of balance and abundance. With this philosophy at heart, we hope to make your stay with us a truly rare and unforgettable experience.”

the look.

Plucked straight out of Architectural Digest, these stylish light-filled suites cantilevered on a baobab-clad hill offer a harmonious blend of impeccable aesthetics, comfort, and immersion in nature.

Spaces are tastefully pared-back, blending earthy hues, brushed concrete, crisp, clean lines, and minimal fuss: not a single detail detracts from its stunning surroundings. Rooms are light, bright, and comfortable, awash in earthy greens and creamy whites and defined by natural woven mats and a less-is-more décor. Comfy low-lying beds, chaise lounges, and freestanding egg-shaped tubs look out through dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass windows framing the canopy of African scrub. And the stylish plunge pool surrounded by comfy sun lounges and raised firepits will undoubtedly have your Instagram popping — the perfect place to press pause, watch a sunset and savor a slower pace of life.
