Namibia / Greater Sossusvlei & NamibRand

Majestic dunes, stark-white salt pans, and red deserts

Sossusvlei and the NamibRand Reserve feature majestic dunes, stark-white salt pans, and red deserts sprinkled with desert scrub and shimmering silver grasslands. Located in the south, the NamibRand Reserve is a private nature reserve established by Namibian conservation hero J.A. Brückner to help protect this desert's wildlife and unique ecosystem.

The entire area is a must-see, a vast feast for the senses.

Head out to Dune 45 at sunrise (it pays to get to the park entrance early, before the crowds).

Sleep under the stars in a desert that is recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association as a Dark Sky Reserve. Most of our recommended stays offer overnight camping options, and guides from both Wolwedans and Tok Tokkie are trained to share information on navigating the constellations.

Join a walking safari and scope out the "Desert 5"— oryx, springbok, kudu, zebra, and the tok-tokkie beetle.

Splurge on a hot air balloon ride for an unforgettable bird’s eye view of the desert.

Discover the mysterious fairy circles of the Namib. These are strange circles in the sprawling grasslands of the Namib Desert that remain a mystery to this day. You can even buy and reserve one, with donations going to NamibRand conservation efforts.

Learn the ins and outs of the oldest living desert and its creepy-crawly inhabitants as you take a guided walk.

Visit the NaDEET Centre, a non-profit environmental education center for Namibian students, to learn about sustainability and experience the Reserve.
