Namibia / Windhoek & Surroundings

There is much to explore in Windhoek

Windhoek gets a bad rap as being the entry and exit point to onward destinations. But there is much to explore in the city and the surrounding area. We recommend adding a day to check out the nearby sites and stay in one of a handful of charming boutique hotels within driving distance of the Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Windhoek offers numerous craft markets, vibrant townships, quirky Lutheran churches, and botanical gardens. And only a day trip from the city you'll have easy access to smaller nature reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and delightfully sophisticated boutique stays.

the highlights.

Visit the N/a'an ku se Conservation Foundation, only an hour’s drive outside the capital and well worth a visit to check out the conservation work (and star-studded ever since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie visited) wildlife sanctuary.

Join a visit to N/a’an ku se’s ancient San Skills Academy and observe the San bushmen in their traditional village. Nature guides will take you to the academy, where you can join the bushmen and listen to their stories. A night out with the bushmen can also be organized.

Visit the AfriCat Foundation at the Okinjima’s Nature Reserve, a day trip en route to Etosha, and well worth a visit to check out the foundation’s research and conservation work with the lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Shop for souvenirs and support the local artisans at the Namibia Craft Center. The center supports approximately 4,000 artists living in some of the most remote parts of the country.

Grab a coffee at the Craft Cafe (near the Craft Market) and enjoy locally-sourced produce and tasty homemade dishes.

Join a township tour to get a glimpse of life in a historically poverty-stricken neighborhood where the city’s black population was forcefully moved to during the era of apartheid.
