Bursting with small rivers, alpine lakes, pristine taiga forest, and wild-flowered meadows
Tucked away on the borders of Siberia, Mongolia’s northern region is bursting with small rivers, alpine lakes, pristine taiga forests, and wild-flowered meadows. This remote swath of land is also home to the nomadic Tsaatan (members of a small Turkic-speaking Tuvinian ethnic group), who herd domesticated reindeer and are the only people in the world relying on reindeer for transport. A handful of tours will take you to this part of the country, and most include long days in the saddle.
Expeditions typically entail a short flight to Murun, off-roading, mobile tent camping, and long hours on horseback. The journey is not for the faint of heart but certainly, a once-in-a-lifetime experience to get up close and personal with the only reindeer herders left in Mongolia. Thankfully, most expeditions include a camp cook and local horse wranglers.
