Alpine lakes, snow-capped mountains, and mountain plateaus dotted with small nomadic communities

Nestled in the rugged Mongol Altai mountains in the far western corner of the country is a remote landscape of alpine lakes, snow-capped mountains, and plateaus dotted with small nomadic communities. Ulgii, situated in the westernmost province of Bayan-Olgii, borders Russia, China, and Kazakhstan. It is also home to the annual Golden Eagle Festival, spearheaded by the Founder of Three Camel Lodge and Nomadic Expeditions, Jalsa Urubshurow. The Golden Eagle Festival takes place every year in late September or early October, showcasing Kazakh hunters testing the speed, agility, and accuracy of their majestic birds.

And despite the festival's popularity among foreigners, thanks to 'The Eagle Huntress' documentary, it maintains an authentic atmosphere that is truly worth experiencing. We suggest kicking your adventure up a notch by throwing in a mountain trek to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park or the Khoton and Khurgan Lakes—perfect for anyone up for some excitement and not afraid of a bit of cold. This amazing park stretches south from Tavanbogd Uul and has stunning lakes and snow-capped peaks with killer views into China and Russia.
